The new edition of This Zine Will Change Your Life
is live. We have a new story, Wings by Mason Johnson, which we
are way excited about, and, (almost) as always, photo action from Adam Lawrence, music curation from Jason Behrends and "my friend" debate prose love from Pete Anderson.
We hope you enjoy this edition and we appreciate all shout-outs and
links. Finally, please note, we are hoping more of you will submit
comix, and music, novel excerpts, and art, and video, yes, video, and
combinations there of. And most finally, walk-off home runs baby, many, and awesome.
Yes, Interview Sundays is back baby. We recently had the chance to talk You Can Make Him Like You with TBWCYL, Inc. favorite, This Podcast Will Change Your Life podcastee, This Zine Will Change Your Life flunkee and rock star writer and lunch companion Pete Anderson; and more specifically Chicago sites that make appearances in the book, including, and we suppose in this case, limited to Metro, Old Town Ale House and Billy Goat Tavern. We also got to talk Tom Cruise, Studs Terkel, The Hold Steady and long-time This Blog Will Change Your Life muse Elizabeth Crane. All-in-all much fun indeed, and much appreciated, thanks bro.
We have been on the road and we have been reading. And while we are juggling several books at this time, today we are most happy to let you know about Big Lonesome by Jim Ruland. On the one hand you have a wildly imaginative and wide-ranging collection of stories that touch base on everything from war to stalking, and everyone one from Popeye to Dick Tracy. On the other hand though, you've got a series of stories that bring both the humor - something we would argue is way to underutilized these days - in pieces like Still Beautiful and Kessler Has No Lucky Pants, and the pain, especially in the fantastic Night Soil Man and Brains For Bengo, the latter of which absolutely crushed us, and which as a side note we happened to be reading on the train coming in from the airport last night so was oddly reminiscent of the last story that affected us this profoundly, An Optimist is the Human Personification of Spring from the quite fine Charactered Pieces by Caleb J. Ross, which we also happened to be reading on the train. It may be a train thing, but either way please take a moment to hit the Big Lonesome because it really just might change your life.
Bam. It's Week Ten of This Self-Portrait Will Change Your Life. We had an idea that didn't work. It was beautiful, and daring, it could have changed lives, and we do love to change lives, but it was not to be, hence this week's title "Failed Experiment." We of course are fully committed to revisiting this groundbreaking, albeit failed idea, just as we are fully committed to producing one self-portrait per week for one year as part of this project. And why are we so committed to this? Because we care. About ourselves. We are self-absorbed and This Self-Portrait Will Change Your Life seems like the perfect manifestation of that. As always, if you want to follow the project in its entirety please feel free to hit the Flickr and if you want to see your own self-portrait grace This Blog Will Change Your Life feel free to hit us at thiszinewillchangeyourlife@yahoo.com. Cool? Cool.
You know, we don't spend a lot of time here at This Blog Will Change Your Life talking politics because frankly we don't see how doing so will increase sales. That said, today we are making a sort of exception because we are quite geeked about the next issue of Wonka Vision magazine where TBWCYL, Inc. spokesperson Ben Tanzer is a staff writer. Issue #42 which is due out in August is not only dedicated to Music and Politics, but on the cover you will find among others, Billy Bragg, hands down one of our favorite artists here at TBWCYL, Inc. headquarters. We hope you will take a look at this most excellent issue, but more importantly we also hope you will consider supporting and hyping Wonka Vision, because it is not only quite cool, and quite well done, but this being a time period where we seem to be endlessly losing great magazines, journals and zines, we need to band together and take care of those who continue to exist despite the odds stacked against them. If all that isn't enough however, we also believe that Wonka Vision will likely change your life, if only briefly, which as you know, we tend to think is the coolest thing of all.
