Sorry, but I have to part ways with you on this one. Empire not only felt like a sequel, but even a mere placeholder for the next movie in the series. Star Wars was a standalone classic, but Empire seemed incomplete, like it was nothing more than a lead-in to the next one.
I have to agree with Kelley: The best of the series. It was sooo dark, nothing like Star Wars. A place holder? For what? Return of the Jedi? I think it took balls to end it with the protagonist being defeated. It wasn't a tidy Hollywood ending. Just because it left you hanging doesn't make it a placeholder...
I feel like a fool, my first comment here is about The Empire Strikes Back, but those are fighting words... placeholder...

Absolutely the best film in the series. Dark, well-written and paced. Iconic. If only Lucas could let go of the reins more often.
