It was sooo dark, nothing like Star Wars. A place holder? For what? Return of the Jedi? I think it took balls to end it with the protagonist being defeated. It wasn't a tidy Hollywood ending. Empire not only felt like a sequel, but even a mere placeholder for the next movie in the series.
